    The TE PĀ TŪ culture evening is engaging and feels very authentic with all the team from the same whanau (Māori for family) you can even meet the team and grab a photo. The interactive activities are designed to get everyone involved and the village is a sample of a traditional kainga (Māori for village). The performances and costumes felt very authentic. The food is a highlight, it is a mix of traditional kai (Māori for food) and modern New Zealand cuisine.   • Te Puia is one of the most popular experiences in Rotorua and is only 4 minutes’ drive from the city centre. It has a multiple of different geothermal and cultural offerings. You can try a traditional Hāngī (traditional way of cooking in the ground) There is a small shuttle that moves you around the park so not a lot of walking is required. Te Puia offers options to combine geothermal with the rich Māori culture of Rotorua. Being a popular geothermal park it’s important to book particularly for the evening and Hāngī options. Overall it’s a good option of seeing different geothermal and Māori cultural experiences in a relativity short time, just be prepared for the crowds.

    Enter the world of Mitai, and learn about the history of this area which was once flourished in villages. Cultural Performance & Experience! The story of the migration of Tamatekapua of the Te Arawa canoe to Aotearoa and the Māori Pacifica connection told in performing arts! Come and join us in this Māori fusion extravaganza, including a feast for the ravenous! Buffet, the delicious tempting traditional hangi food of the Great Ocean of Kiwa! Our hāngī earth oven kai (food) includes meat, chicken, kumara and much more. The hāngī is cooked in an earth-oven, a hole 1-2m into the ground, the baskets of kai are placed on hot stones at the bottom of a hāngī pit. The kai is then covered to trap the heat, the steam and heat from heated hāngī stones infuses the kai with delicious earthy flavours while it cooks for 3-4 hours.

  • The evening’s entertainment begins after the customary welcome ceremony. Followed by the use of traditional weaponry, graceful poi dancers and the fierce Haka performers. You get to explore the local forest on a guided bush walk where you’ll learn about the use of plants in traditional medicine. One of the highlights of the evening is seeing glow worms plus having the pleasure of watching a traditional Waka, a war canoe, row down the stream. A traditional Hangi dinner of slow cooked meat, poultry and vegetables roasted in an underground oven is included. Overall there is a lot packed in the 3 hours and can feel a bit crowded in peak seasons.

Cooked in the bubbling geothermal waters and steam of Whakarewarewa Valley, the hangi is unique and delicious.   • The Whakarewarewa Living Māori Village is owned and operated by local residents and provides an intimate look at a living Māori Village. Combining with the natural geothermal wonders it’s a great option to experience modern Māori life as well as the old ways. With different options including cultural performances, traditional food, and guided tours there is a lot to see and do so allow plenty of time. Overall it’s similar to Te Puia but with the added bonus of experancing a modern working Māori village.
